About Us
Our Mission
Sailing On aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing of current and former Australian Defence Force members.
We provide the opportunity to take part in the repair and sailing of yachts, helping you feel happier and more connected through learning new skills, being part of a team and supporting each other in a relaxed environment.
Sailing On is a not-for-profit organisation created by and for veterans and current Defence members.
We use sailing to rebuild camaraderie, improve mental health, and help participants develop new skills in a supportive team environment.
Research from the UK, Israel, and our own experience in Australia shows that sailing—paired with the camaraderie found in groups like Sailing On - can make a real difference to mental health and well being. While many military establishments once maintained yachts for serving personnel, most were sold off due to rising insurance costs.
Sailing On is working to restore that opportunity - offering a safe, supportive space on the water where veterans can reconnect, recover, and move forward.
In partnership with Open Arms, we will also offer first line mental health courses for all of our members.
Sailing On was formed in 2021 to improve the mental health of serving Australian Defence Force members and veterans.
The suicide rate among current and former defence force members in Australia is much too high. Sailing On aims to help combat this by providing opportunities to improve health & wellbeing through learning and participation. Our activities are designed around the act, belong, commit approach to - learning new skills, being part of a team, training and being an active part of our community. We now have over 80 members in WA and 30 in NSW.
